Bargiel did not write a lot of music. He was mostly busy as a teacher significantly influencing
for instance Paul Juon which Sterling has released two orchestral CDs with.
His symphony has a very arresting first movement, influenced by Beethoven, symphony 5, but lighter in
spirit.
The second movement is rather solemn in character. Among his collegues in the Leipzig conservatory was Gade
and there is definitely a resemblance with the Ossian ouverture here.
Even the third movement has memorable and significant themes while the last movement is light hearted in spirit.
Also in Medea ouverture Beethoven is not far away.
Schubert is not far away in the Trauenspiel ouverture while the intermezzo is more subdued
You will enjoy the engaged and spirited performances led by José Zapata!
