Already at the age of four, his father Jussi and his uncles began to learn the essentials of the art of singing under grandfather David’s solid guidance. David came to New York in 1899 and was admitted to the Metropolitan Opera School after a few years where he thoroughly experienced and listened to the very best opera artists. David received the co-called bel canto from the source as he witnessed Enrico Caruso changed the way of singing opera. Returning home to Sweden David arranged concerts in churches and parish homes and later included his sons in what was to be known as the Björling Quartet, touring the country. After a banking career, Lars Björling returned to singing with studies in Rome under Debora Fambri. Here he could get first hand knowledge of bel canto under her safe guidance.
