A grand opening of the Sterling catalogue. It would be fair to call this composer either the doyen of Swedish opera composers. Or why not the Swedish Verdi...it is not inaccurate to call him this. Ivar Hallström wrote six operas and the Swedish folklore is not far away blend with truly great dramatic writing. The opera was one of the most played ever at the Stockholm, Opera House during the composers life time with more than 100 performances. Track 7 CD 1 must have been inspired by Gounod, Faust. Even the action itself belongs to Swedish folklore. Grieg used the same story in one of his compositions.
